Marie Shelley

My process starts with solvent transfers of old family photographs on watercolor paper, over which I draw an abandoned building in pen and ink. The photograph blends into the drawing, becoming part of the landscape. The juxtaposition reminds the viewer that the land it stands on used to be open space or somebody’s home. People lived and worked in these buildings, now long forgotten. As time passes the memories of their prior occupants fade, as the buildings themselves slowly turn to dust and blend back into the landscape.
