Woman Made Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Nature House" with works by 40 artists and poets.

In discussing her selections for Nature House, juror Rosemary Luckett noted, “I applaud all the artists and poets who submitted such a wide range of media, creative thought and visual energy to this process. It takes real courage to make art about the state of our nature house today.

The challenge for me was to maintain the boundaries of the show description: this planet is our house and it looks like how we treat it—the positive or negative interplay between human kind and the natural world. I looked for some evidence of human impact on the land/flora/fauna portrayed in each of the images, sculptures or poems submitted as well as each artist’s fluency with the materials they used, and overall composition.

Selected works show a wide range of thought and imagery. Most hit the nail on the head by revealing subtly, or not so subtly, how each of us is complicit in detrimental changes to the environment. Contrary to the many works in this show representing contaminated landscapes, a few describe the carefully tended or gardened terrain that we think about so fondly, and which has been our legacy for so long.

Each poem and each artwork is a gem to be enjoyed, contemplated, and then absorbed into our cells so we don’t forget what each artist is saying. We ought not to forget because they are all truthful and challenging. I encourage all artists, whether accepted or not, to view the art and poetry in the exhibit, to continue producing this kind of work, and to integrate care for the planet into their daily lives by checking out sites like www.carbonfund.org (how to reduce your carbon footprint), www.plant-trees.org (Trees for the Future), www.ucsusa.org (Union of Concerned Scientists), earthcharter.org, or any of the many other groups now dedicated to solutions for reducing negative human impact on the earth and all its biospheres.” ,/p>
