My paintings are about the convergence of inner and outer worlds, shadow landscapes that we all move through. In the past, I painted things in an attempt to figure out why they baffled me. I never painted the landscape for it never baffled me. I saw it peripherally, as a constant in a world of mighty change, and overlooked it, plain and simple. Which it, of course, is not. Properly perplexed, I now paint landscapes. Woven through the imagery is the crow, both talisman and protractor. Its shape echoes the curves of the hills that surround the farm where I live and work. The time spent here has allowed me to not only see the land, but to recognize its energy as my own and vice versa. It is a vital exchange. And so, I also conjure inner landscapes, using paint to describe the terrain of the mind and soul and how that topography reverberates in the physical world. More and more, the paint leads the way and I follow. |
