N E W S L E T T E R S - Fall 2007
Fall_2007_Newsletter_I

Letter from the Executive Director:

Greetings!

Welcome to our Fall 2007 Newsletter updating you about news, exhibitions, events and calls for art at Woman Made Gallery (WMG). We would love to hear your comments and suggestions. First, let me share recent Gallery activities with you.

Though funding for the Illinois Arts Council was recently decreased by 30%, WMG is fortunate to have received an adjusted preliminary recommendation of a $7,120.00 grant. Because the arts are always in danger of being cut from government budgets, we urge you to write your state representatives and let them know how important the arts are to you and your community. Get involved and visit www.artsalliance.org/adleg.shtml to speak out, take action and raise awareness.

This first quarter of our fiscal year, the gallery received a generous gift of $10,000 from an Anonymous Donor and a $1,000 donation from our Advisory Board Member, Mary Ann Thompson-Frenk, in support of our work for women artists. Membership is steadily increasing and we received 44 new and 119 renewal memberships from July 1 to September 21.

One of the more invigorating challenges WMG is undertaking is the development of a five-year strategic plan. This process is being guided by the intelligence, expertise and generosity of Alison Zehr, a nonprofit management consultant, and Rebecca Sive from The Sive Group, Inc., both Advisory Board Members. In addition, all of our Board Members are investing their time and experience to create a plan that will ensure the future of WMG and improve its programs and services.

Regarding our Outreach Programs, WMG is continuing its fruitful collaboration with The Women's Treatment Center in Chicago, providing art workshops to its clients, taught by Carmen M. Perez. The project is supported in part by a grant from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation.

On August 25th the gallery honored its members and volunteers with a warm and wonderful Recognition Brunch. Without them, much of the important work WMG provides would go unfulfilled. Two examples of this are the valuable work of Marty Bash who has helped with volunteer coordination for more than two years, as well as membership and editing, and Karen Rechtschaffen, who volunteers at the Gallery regularly. I extend my deepest gratitude to the WMG board, staff, volunteers and supporters for their productive service and vision for WMG.
